“InterTabac was once again the meeting place for the international tobacco industry and InterSupply has successfully developed,” said Sabine Loos, c.e.o. of Westfalenhallen Dortmund GmbH, summing up the three trade fair days.
A total of 11,700 international trade visitors (FKM certified) visited Messe Westfalenhallen Dortmund on September 16-18, 2016. The number of visitors from foreign countries was again remarkably high, as was satisfaction among visitors and exhibitors. Of all the trade visitors, 37% came from overseas, hailing from Benelux, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Lithuania, Austria, Poland, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Iraq, China, Algeria, South Africa, Israel, and the United States. All German federal states were represented at the trade fair, with large visitor groups from Lower Saxony, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hessen, and Hamburg. Among the shows’ exhibitors, 60% at InterTabac and 70% at InterSupply came from overseas.
InterTabac remains the world’s largest trade fair of its kind and the leading trade fair for the industry. (The number of visitors, exhibitors, and floor space for this trade fair are assessed and certified based on the standardized definitions of the FKM – Society for the Voluntary Control of Fair and Exhibition Statistics.)
Products groups that trade visitors at InterTabac found particularly interesting this year included cigars, cigarillos, cigarettes, smoking accessories, e-cigarettes, e-shishas, fine-cut tobacco, and cigarette paper. This was the result of a visitor survey conducted by an independent trade fair market research institute. The survey also found that trade visitors rated the range of offerings of the 521 exhibitors – 442 of which exhibited at InterTabac – as “good”.
At InterSupply, visitors were especially interested in raw tobacco, packaging, flavors, additives, and machines for manufacturing tobacco products. This new trade fair continues to grow each year. While the number of exhibitors had already increased to 79 in comparison to the previous year, this year nearly half of all InterTabac visitors stopped by at InterSupply as well.

“Visit was worthwhile”
A total 9 out of 10 trade visitors found their visit to InterTabac worthwhile. A further 5% was unable to reply at the time of the survey. Visitors stated that the goals for InterTabac that they had achieved best were product sampling and gathering information on products, services, or techniques. The largest visitor groups were from retail, followed by wholesale and industry. Entrepreneurs, managers, and departmental managers were the largest professional groups. More than 90% counsel, co-decide, or make purchasing decisions for their companies. This meant an interesting target group again for exhibitors.
InterTabac and InterSupply also offered exhibitors many contacts that they would otherwise not find at any other trade fair. A total 6 out of 10 trade visitors do not visit any other trade fair with a similar subject. For 80.5% of exhibitors, the expectations they had for InterTabac 2016 were either partially or completely fulfilled. For a further 11.4%, their expectations were even surpassed. The survey also reported that 91.1% of exhibitors enjoyed being at the trade fair.
Things are looking good for next year as well. A total 9 out of 10 trade visitors have already said that they intend to visit InterTabac and/or InterSupply, which will take place September 22-24, 2017.
