Beverly Hills is set to become the first US city to have a sweeping ban on nearly all tobacco products.
On June 4, the city council unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting the sale of most tobacco products. Said tobacco products include cigarettes, cigars, dissolvable products, electronic cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and water pipes.
The ban is expected to go into effect January 1, 2021, and will affect tobacco retailers, including gas stations, convenience stores, and pharmacies. However, cigar lounges and hotels will be exempt, allowing them to sell tobacco products to guests. The city will review the impact of the ban on tourism in three years.
