The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has filed a legal motion requesting an extension for e-cigarette and other next-generation product companies to submit Premarket Tobacco Product Applications (PMTAs) to September 9, from the original deadline of May 12.
If the extension till September 9 is established, the 12-month review process would commence at that point.
FDA said the request was made “solely because of the coronavirus outbreak” and that it would not do so “but for these highly unusual circumstances.”
A coalition of public-health and anti-tobacco advocacy groups have already sued to require FDA to adhere to the May 12 deadline.
