Founded 90 years ago, the eponymous tobacco shop will close permanently in September, and not to be too cliched…an era has ended.
Stepping into the legendary cigar and tobacco products shop on 42nd Street was to take a step back in time, from its hardwood classic furnishings to the non-apologetic presentation of its high-quality cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products. The Townhouse, as the shop was known as, was a destination in itself for tobacco products enthusiasts and tourists.
Philip Morris parent group Altria acquired Nat Sherman in 2017 from the family in undisclosed terms, and reportedly was unsuccessful in finding a buyer for the cigar part of the business.
Nat Sherman’s super-premium cigarette brands include Classic, MCD, and Originals, and at least some of them will continue to be manufactured in North Carolina and sold by Altria. The company’s noted premium cigar brands such as Timeless, Metropolitan, and Epoca will cease production.
From its beginnings in 1930 in the heart of New York City's garment district, Nat Sherman became one of the most recognized and sought-after brands for adult tobacco consumers.
