New research suggests that cigarettes will be stubbed out in Britain by 2050.
Conducted by Frontier Economics and commissioned by Philip Morris Limited, the research found major divides in the predicted rate of decline in different parts of the country, but predicts nearly a quarter of England will have stopped smoking before 2030.
Researchers say Bristol will be first to lead the charge, becoming the first city to stub out cigarettes for good by 2024, followed two years later by York and Wokingham, Portsmouth, Reading, East Riding, and Blackburn, and Darwen are set to be completely smoke free by 2027, with Buckinghamshire, Bournemouth, and Milton Keynes expected to phasing fags out for good one year later.
The last two, Southampton and Derby, will be among the final British cities to end the habit, in 2049 and 2050 respectively, according to income, employment, health, and education data.
The researchers suggested the number of smokers using NHS Stop Smoking services and switching to e-cigarettes needs to increase if communities are to go smoke-free faster.
