TURKEY
Turkey is the only country in the world in which all six tobacco control criteria advised by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control are enacted, says Associate Professor Mehmet Akif Seylan, vice president of the Turkish Green Crescent Society (Yeşilay).
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control was initiated in 2003 and signed by a total of 180 countries. Turkey was an early adopter, signing it in 2004.
Seylan also said that Turkey’s fight against tobacco is a model to the rest of the world, as well as highlighting that Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was presented with an award by the WHO due to his success in the fight against tobacco use.
