MYANMAR
The ministry of health and sports is planning to annually raise taxes on tobacco and tobacco-related products.
Tobacco prices and those of tobacco products in Myanmar are still relatively low compared to those in neighboring countries, even though the government increases the tax rates occasionally.
According to a ministry official, Myanmar has been able to collect only 30% tobacco tax, which is lower than what is collected in neighboring countries, where the tobacco tax collected is higher than 70%. Currently, the tax levied on a packet of tobacco worth over MMK1,000 is only MMK16.
