New figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that tobacco use continued to decline among high school and middle school students in the US in 2017.
Nearly 1 in 5 high school students and 1 in 18 middle school students reported current use of any tobacco product in 2017, compared with nearly 1 in 4 high school students and 1 in 13 middle school students in 2011.
Brian King, Ph.D., of the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health said, “The big news here is that we have seen a considerable decline in all forms of youth tobacco product use since 2011. There are well over a million fewer kids using any form of tobacco product. However, on balance, the bad news is that there are still 3.5 million kids in the US using some type of tobacco product and among those, half are using two or more tobacco products.”
