Altria Group subsidiary, US Smokeless Tobacco Co., has submitted a modified risk tobacco product application to the US Food and Drug Administration for its Copenhagen Snuff Fine Cut moist smokeless tobacco product.
Last November, Martin J. Barrington, Altria chairman and c.e.o, told investors and analysts that the company has been investing in research aimed at making reduced-risk products “the next leg of commercial success” for the company. “We aspire to be the U.S. leader in authorized noncombustible reduced-risk products,” he said.
Since 2011 FDA has reviewed about 35 modified risk applications from tobacco companies but none have been approved. Some remain under review, while others were denied by the agency or withdrawn by the companies that submitted them.
